What Are Whale Players?
Whale players, often called simply whales, are a small segment of a game’s player base that spends significantly more money than the average player.
In free-to-play and live-service games, whales may spend regularly on in-game currency, premium items, character pulls, cosmetics, or progression boosts.
What Defines a Whale Player?
There is no fixed spending threshold, but whale players are typically characterized by:
- High and frequent in-game purchases.
- Strong long-term engagement with the game.
- Willingness to spend to save time, gain power, or complete collections.
- Participation in limited-time offers, events, or premium systems.
Some ecosystems further segment spenders into categories like dolphins (moderate spenders) and minnows (low spenders).
How Many Regular Players Equal One Whale?
There isn’t a standardized industry ratio that says “X regular players = 1 whale” because player spending distributions vary widely by game and genre.
However, multiple industry reports show that whales are extremely rare, often less than 1% of all players.
